Branching Out

This table was a step into the unknown for me.

Inspired by the formica and chrome dining sets of the 1960s and the natural structure of tree branches, I played around with the idea of each leg branching out to create a strong yet airy support. Steam bending and laminations were both something I had no experience with when I came up with the design for the legs on this table. The use of Yellow Cedar for the steam bent laminations of the legs is a nod towards the bentwood boxes made by the First Nations people of what is now called British Columbia. I used reclaimed old growth Western Red Cedar for the top which was grown, logged and reclaimed from the roof of a garage on Unceded Musquem territory (North Shore, Vancouver).
